Illustration Competition

1. SCOPE OF THE COMPETITION

Do you remember having to kiss relatives as a child? Do you remember the tickly beard, the sweaty skin, the garlic breath? «Slobber slobber kiss kiss» by children’s books author Anita Lehmann is a picture book for 3 to 5 year old children. It is about a girl finding an ingenious way to stop her relatives from kissing her. If you want to find out more about the story and receive the manuscript, please contact us at: creative@helvetiq.ch. Do not forget to include a portfolio showing other works and your biographical information.

Eventually, we will send you the text and ask you to illustrate it.

The winner will have his or her work published by Helvetiq in 2019 in Switzerland, Germany and France.

 2. BENEFICIARIES

Entries will be accepted from illustrators over 18 years of age, of any nationality, with or without published work.

3. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WORK AND ELEMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED

The dimension of the book will be 20x27 cm. Participants should submit the following:

  •  Draft storyboard of the entire story in black and white 
  •  Two double pages with the finished illustrations in colour
  •  Up to three cover ideas in colour

4. SUBMISSION DEADLINE AND METHOD OF SUBMISSION

Request for manuscript accepted until December 15, 2018. Entries must be submitted by February 15, 2018. Please send your submission in PDF form to Felix Kindelán: creative@helvetiq.ch. Winners will be announced during the Bologna Children’s Book Fair on April 1–4, 2019 where Switzerland will be the Guest of Honor.

5. PRIZE

The winner will be awarded a cash prize of CHF 3000. Of this total, CHF 1500 corresponds to an advance on royalties for the publication of the work by Helvetiq in French and German. Helvetiq will sign the necessary publication contract with the winning illustrator. The prize money will be paid upon publication of the book.

The prize includes the publication of the book in French and German by Helvetiq, who may also negotiate its sale to other languages.

Helvetiq reserves the right not to award the prize for reasons of quality.

6. WINNERS’ OBLIGATION

Text and illustrations must not be shared with any third parties or be submitted to any other publisher or competition. The copyright of the story remains with the publisher, Helvetiq. 

The winner undertakes to complete the work for publication by July 15, 2019 at the latest. He or she is also committed to work closely with Helvetiq in the creation of the final work.
